i also used to think that elevators were safe from falling due to secondary velocity-triggered braking systems.

Well yeah, it’s dead now.
After a bitter cold night my car wouldn’t start this morning. The year-old battery wasn’t dead - at first - but the engine just wouldn’t quite catch and eventually I ran the battery down trying. I figure it’s frozen fuel lines or something.

I sat through most of dinner/date on Friday night with my dress on backwards, wondering why the usually semi-clevage bearing neck line was choking me, before realizing and excusing myself to address the issue.
